Static Load Testing for Structural Performance and Compliance

Southern Asset Management delivers specialist Static Load Testing services across the UK to confirm the structural performance of lighting columns and related assets. This testing method verifies how a structure behaves when exposed to applied forces, providing clear evidence of strength, stability, and compliance with required standards.

Our service reflects our focus on safety, accuracy, and accountability. Every test provides dependable data that supports informed decisions, long-term asset planning, and public safety.

What is Static Load Testing and why is it required?

Static Load Testing assesses the structural integrity of the lighting column. Static loading is a direct measurement of a column’s mast strength and is recommended by the Institute of Lighting Professionals (GN22). Also referred to as the force deflection test, it is a form of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT).

The SAM test system accurately simulates the stresses by applying a calculated force at an appropriate height, which is calculated by our custom software to BS EN 40 standards. The forces are calculated according to the appropriate design code and the test load derived.

How is Static Load Testing carried out?

The SAM Force Deflection Test applies a controlled static load to the column or mast using our mobile testing laboratory (MTL), measuring the resulting deflection. Our calculation software determines the correct load and height to stress the areas of highest concern, assessing both corrosion and fatigue.

The column is secured and loaded safely, with force and deflection monitored in real time and recorded as force-deflection graphs.

These graphs are stored automatically and can be reviewed or replayed to evaluate structural stability. The test covers the full 360° circumference, including critical areas such as the base, door opening, shaft, swage, and below-ground sections, ensuring defects and flaws are detected across the entire structure.

What types of structures benefit from Static Load Testing?

Static Load Testing is suitable for a wide range of assets, including:

Street Lighting Columns on Highways and Public Roads

Structures Exposed to High Wind Loads or Open Environments

Columns Supporting CCTV Cameras, Signage, or Seasonal Decorations

Assets Where Structural Performance Must Be Verified Following Inspection

How does Static Load Testing support risk management?

By measuring how a structure responds under load, Static Load Testing identifies weaknesses that may not be visible through inspection alone. This reduces the risk of unexpected failure and supports proactive maintenance planning.

Clear performance data allows asset owners to prioritise works based on actual structural behaviour rather than assumption. This approach improves safety outcomes and supports effective use of maintenance budgets.

How are results recorded and reported?

All test data is recorded digitally and reviewed through our bespoke Business Management System (BMS). Results are presented in clear reports that explain structural performance, compliance status, and any recommendations.

These reports provide auditable evidence to support regulatory requirements and internal asset management decisions. They also integrate with wider asset records, ensuring continuity across inspection, testing, and maintenance planning.

How does Static Load Testing fit with other testing services?

Static Load Testing forms part of a broader assessment strategy when combined with other inspection methods.

When is Ultrasonic Testing appropriate?

Ultrasonic testing measures wall thickness and internal condition using high frequency sound waves. It is used to assess material condition and identify corrosion or section loss within the column.

When is Eddy Current Testing required?

Eddy Current Testing focuses on detecting corrosion near ground level, where environmental exposure is highest. It provides precise information on wall thickness loss in this critical zone.

Together, these services provide a balanced view of both material condition and structural performance.
